Lead Proofreader

Project overview

Our client, an environmental non profit, is looking for a freelance Lead Proofreader to support the team on an ongoing ad hoc basis starting by the 2nd week of December. As the Lead Proofreader, you will be working alongside an internal Proofreader and supporting with the delivery of 2 high profile publications to start. The Lead Proofreader will be working on the quarterly newsletter and the annual Impact Report. The Lead Proofreader is detail oriented and has an eye for consistency, formatting, and design accuracy.

Responsibilities

• Proofread and mark up PDF layouts for grammar, style, consistency, formatting, and production issues.
• Consolidate and incorporate comments from a secondary proofreader into a master proof document.
• Proofread and edit the annual Impact Report on Wednesday December 9th and return the edits to the team by end of day Thursday December 10th.
• Participate in a live editing session on January 4th with editorial and design teams to review and implement final revisions, including typesetting, line breaks, spacing, and layout adjustments.
• Maintain a comprehensive record of all edits and changes throughout the review process.
• Review revised files to ensure all corrections have been accurately implemented.
• Approve files for production and communicate readiness to design and production teams.
• Monitor proof review and approval workflows, remaining alert to any last-minute revisions prior to publication.

Requirements

• Professional proofreading experience, preferably with magazines, annual reports, newsletters, or other print publications.
• Strong understanding of editorial style, grammar, and publication production processes.
• Exceptional attention to detail and ability to identify issues that may be missed during prior editorial reviews.
• Comfortable reviewing PDFs, collaborating with designers, and participating in live editing meetings. In this position, you may have access to client or customer systems, confidential and/or proprietary information or data. Benefits
