Project overview
(Security Cleared) MS Fabric and Power BI Architect (Outside IR35 Contract)
MS Fabric/Power BI Architect - Fully remote/Outside IR35 - Consultancy/Gov Entity
Role Description
We are seeking an experienced Fabric and Power BI Architect to lead the architecture and technical design of a secure, scalable Microsoft Fabric and Power BI platform.
The role will be responsible for defining and implementing the underlying Azure and Fabric architecture, covering Infrastructure as Code, OneLake, identity and access management, secrets management, platform performance and cross-cloud connectivity. The Architect will work closely with Data Engineers and Power BI Developers to ensure the platform provides a secure, governed and high-performing foundation for data, analytics and reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Microsoft Fabric & Power BI Architecture: Define and maintain the end-to-end architecture for Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable and aligned with wider Azure architecture.
Azure Infrastructure as Code: Design, author and maintain modular Terraform configurations to provision and manage the Azure infrastructure supporting the Fabric and Power BI platform.
Azure Key Vault & Secrets Architecture: Architect and manage Azure Key Vault, including secure management of credentials and secrets used by service principals, integrations and Fabric connections.
OneLake Architecture & Governance: Define and govern the OneLake architecture, including Fabric workspaces, Lakehouses and shortcuts, establishing secure and effective patterns for accessing data across the platform.
Identity & Access Management: Design and implement a robust IAM model using Microsoft Entra ID, Azure RBAC, Fabric workspace roles and item-level permissions, applying zero-trust and least-privilege principles.
Power BI Architecture & Developer Enablement: Define architectural patterns and provide technical guidance to Power BI Developers, ensuring reporting solutions make effective use of the underlying Fabric platform and curated data.
Direct Lake & Platform Performance: Define and optimise the architecture supporting Power BI Direct Lake, including relevant Fabric configurations and underlying Azure infrastructure.
AWS/Azure Integration: Define integration patterns for bringing AWS-hosted data into the Azure/Fabric ecosystem, including the use of OneLake shortcuts. Practical experience implementing AWS-to-Azure or AWS-to-Fabric connectivity would be valuable.
Security & Governance: Establish appropriate architectural standards and governance across Azure, Microsoft Fabric, OneLake and Power BI, covering security, access controls and platform configuration.
CI/CD & DevOps: Support automated and repeatable platform deployments using Terraform, source control and CI/CD practices.
Technical Leadership: Act as a technical authority across the Fabric and Power BI landscape, working with Data Engineers, Power BI Developers, cloud/platform teams and other architects to resolve architectural challenges and establish reusable patterns.
