Scala Developer (Play Framework & Akka)

Project overview

We are seeking an experienced Scala Developer to join a high-performing engineering team delivering scalable, cloud-based applications. The successful candidate will have strong experience with Scala, Play Framework, and Akka, and will be responsible for developing and maintaining robust microservices and distributed systems in an agile environment.

This is a primarily remote role with occasional travel to the office for key workshops, planning sessions, and team collaboration.

If you're an experienced Scala Developer with strong Play Framework and Akka expertise and are looking for your next contract opportunity, we'd love to hear from you.

• Design, develop, and maintain applications using Scala and the Play Framework
• Build and support high-performance, distributed systems using Akka
• Develop RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
• Collaborate with architects, developers, business analysts, and QA teams
• Participate in code reviews and champion engineering best practices
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks
• Produce high-quality technical documentation where required
• Work within agile delivery teams, participating in sprint ceremonies and planning activities
• Strong commercial experience developing applications in Scala
• Proven experience with Play Framework
• Hands-on experience with Akka (Actors, Streams, Cluster or related components)
• Experience building and supporting microservices architectures
• Strong understanding of REST APIs and Back End development
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases
• Familiarity with Git and modern CI/CD practices
• Experience working within Agile/Scrum delivery environments
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
• Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes
• Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging technologies
• Understanding of monitoring and observability tools
• Public sector or enterprise-scale project experience
• A proactive problem solver with strong attention to detail
• Someone comfortable working independently in a remote-first environment
• Strong team player with excellent communication skills
• Passion for delivering high-quality, maintainable software
