Project overview

We are looking for an experienced, hands-on Systems Engineer to take a key role in the development of complex, high-performance engineering systems.

This opportunity will suit an engineer who enjoys working across multiple disciplines, solving challenging technical problems and taking real ownership of product development.

You may have a background in high-power lasers, photonics, space systems, defence technology or sophisticated scientific instrumentation.

We are particularly interested in candidates who have worked in smaller, agile engineering environments, where technical ownership extends beyond a single subsystem.

• Drive the development of complex multidisciplinary hardware systems from requirements through design, integration and verification.
• Coordinate engineering activities across mechanical, optical, electrical, controls and thermal disciplines.
• Lead and contribute to formal technical design reviews, including PDR, CDR and MRR.
• Develop and review engineering requirements, system documentation and verification plans.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership to a multidisciplinary engineering team.
• Work closely with scientists, engineers and Project Managers to deliver technically robust solutions.
• Identify system-level risks, manage technical interfaces and resolve engineering trade-offs.
• Support assembly, integration and testing (AIT) activities throughout the product lifecycle.
• Approximately 5–8 years of practical experience designing sophisticated engineering hardware.
• At least 3 years of dedicated systems engineering experience.
• Strong understanding of systems engineering processes, development gates and technical reviews.
• Proven experience taking complex products through requirements, design, verification and integration.
• Experience directly managing or technically leading engineers from multiple disciplines.
• Confidence working with scientific stakeholders and project delivery teams.
• A broad understanding of how multiple engineering disciplines contribute to an integrated physical system.

• You're not simply someone who follows a systems engineering process.
• You're an engineer who understands how the complete system works, can challenge and guide technical decisions, and is comfortable taking responsibility for the final product.
• You've been close to the actual engineering, understand the realities of developing complex hardware and can lead a team through the challenges of turning requirements into a fully integrated and verified system.
