Cohesity Backup Senior Architect

Project overview

Scope of Responsibility

· Owns the High Level Design, Detailed Level Design implementation, and validation of the enterprise backup and recovery solution using Cohesity.

· Responsible for aligning the backup architecture with air-gapped, virtualized, and on-prem workloads, ensuring data protection, compliance, and operational recoverability.

· Acts as the technical authority for all backup-related decisions, covering policy configuration, storage targets, scheduling, encryption, and restoration workflows.

Phases of Involvement

Phase 0: Project Initiation Define backup scope, workload types, RPO/RTO targets, and compliance expectations

Phase 1: Definition Architect backup policies, infrastructure design, and data flow mapping

Phase 2: Implementation Deploy and configure Cohesity components, policies, and agents

Go-Live / Stability Validate backup success rates, recovery SLAs, and monitor restore use cases

Close-out Complete runbook handover, documentation, and operational tuning

Key Responsibilities

Area Description

Backup Architecture

Design Define topology (CommServe, Media Agents, Storage Targets), storage tiers (hot/cold/archive), deduplication strategy, and backup zones (prod, DMZ, air-gapped).

Policy Configuration Design policies for backups, file systems, databases, application-aware backups (e.g., SQL, Oracle), and image-level protection. Align schedules with customer RPO/RTO.

Security & Compliance

Controls Implement encryption at rest and in transit. Define role-based access control (RBAC) and air-gapped protection for critical data sets. Enforce immutability policies (if supported).

Storage & Network

Planning Ensure optimal storage sizing for backup retention cycles. Define bandwidth throttling rules, WAN optimization (if applicable), and storage pooling.

Agent Deployment &

Registration Coordinate with workload teams to install and register agents (VMs, DBs, NAS, etc.). Validate compatibility, performance, and policy binding.

Testing & Recovery

Workflows Develop and execute backup and restore test cases, including:

· Platform & Infra Teams (for VM protection and storage tiering);

· Application Owners (for app-aware backups and restores);

· Security Architect (for encryption, access controls, immutability);

· Monitoring/Reporting SMEs (to integrate logs and alerts);

· Operations / Service Desk (for restore workflows and alerts).
