Lead Network Engineer IP/MPLS

Responsibilities

As Lead Network Engineer IP/MPLS, you will shape the technical further development of a highly available carrier and wholesale network architecture. In this role, you will work at the interface between network design, migration, automation, and product development, contributing to ensuring that the IP/MPLS backbone, aggregation and edge areas, and BNG environments remain stable, scalable, and future-proof in the long term. You will develop viable technical concepts, derive robust design and operational documentation from them, and provide technical support for implementation from idea to operation.

You will think not only in individual solutions but in consistent target states, standards, and architectural decisions. Your ability to translate complex technical requirements into clear, actionable concepts and to maintain an overview, even in migration projects, is particularly important. In an environment with high demands on quality, availability, and further development, you will play a central role in the future viability of the network.

• You will design the IP/MPLS network in the core, aggregation, edge, and BNG areas and create HLDs, LLDs, and migration concepts.
• You will develop technical concepts for the further development of defined network areas and contribute your expertise to architecture planning.
• You will provide technical support for network migrations and ensure that technical, operational, and risk-relevant aspects are properly considered.
• You will conceptualize new products for the B2B and wholesale environment from a network perspective and support their technical feasibility and introduction.
• You will contribute to standards, design guidelines, and architectural target states and consolidate architectural decisions into a consistent overall picture.
• You will advise on the definition of technical requirements and collaborate with manufacturers in the areas of configuration, automation, and inventory management.
• You will develop technical solutions for expanding the automation platform and contribute to topics such as Source of Truth, IPAM, Config-Audit, and SW Rollout.
• You will ensure that design, migration, and operational documentation are comprehensible, robust, and practical.

Requirements

For this position, you bring extensive experience in the carrier or ISP environment, ideally with a clear focus on IP/MPLS. You feel comfortable in complex network architectures and understand how to assess technical interrelationships not only in detail but also in the overall picture. In addition to in-depth protocol and platform knowledge, it is important to us that you work in a structured manner, document cleanly, and bring calmness, diligence, and decisiveness to change and migration projects.

You should be able to analyze technical requirements, conceptualize solutions, and coordinate them with various stakeholders. If you have already driven automation topics and like to secure your work with standards, tools, and reusable concepts, you will fit particularly well into this environment.

• You have extensive experience in the carrier/ISP environment with a focus on IP/MPLS.
• You have in-depth knowledge of IS-IS/OSPF, BGP, MPLS, L2VPN/VPLS/EVPN, L3VPN, and QoS.
• You have very good practical experience with Nokia SR OS and/or Cisco IOS-XR/XE and JUNOS.
• You are familiar with broadband access aggregation, especially with BNG, PPPoE/IPoE, RADIUS, DHCP Relay/Option 82, and CGNAT.
• You create robust design and operational documentation such as HLDs and LLDs.
• You have experience in automation with Python, NETCONF/YANG, and gNMI and ideally have already worked with network automation platforms such as Nokia NSP.
• You have experience in migration projects in live networks and consistently think in terms of risk and fallback planning.
• You have a good understanding of interfaces to the optical transport layer and can consider IP and optical layers together.
• You are familiar with common tools such as FNT, phpIPAM, Grafana, or OTRS, or can quickly familiarize yourself with such environments.
• You ideally have relevant certifications such as CCNP/CCIE SP or Nokia NRS II/SRA.
