Project Engineer – Strategic Engineering / CAPEX

Project overview

For a long-term strategic CAPEX project in the pharma/biotech environment, we are looking for an experienced freelance Project Engineer starting in November 2026 to independently support the FEL2/FEL3 and Engineering Design phases.

Responsibilities

Independent creation and further development of a project-specific Engineering Management Plan

Coordination of multidisciplinary engineering packages, including Process, Equipment, Piping, CSA, HVAC, Clean Utilities, Electrical, Automation, BIM, CQV, EHS, Operations and Maintenance

Establishment and maintenance of Engineering Deliverables and Interface Registers

Control and analytical evaluation of Technical Queries, RFIs, Design Comments, Deviations, and Changes

Technical review of User Requirements / PURS, Basis of Design, Scope Boundaries, and Design Criteria

Preparation and technical support of Design Reviews, Constructability Reviews, BIM/Model Reviews, and Value Improvement Reviews

Creation of schedule, progress, cost, and change overviews, including deviation analyses

Technical evaluation of supplier and package documentation

Support with technical decision-making and gate review documentation

Creation of technical final documentation and an Engineering Completion Report

What you bring

Completed degree, e.g., Process Engineering, Pharmaceutical Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology, or comparable

At least 5 years of experience in CAPEX project management in Pharma, Biotech, or Process Industry

Demonstrable experience with FEL2/FEL3 and Detailed Engineering

Experience in coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams and packages

Very good knowledge of GMP-relevant plant construction and EHS

Experience with Requirements, Design, Change, and Interface Management

Very good German and English language skills

Independent, structured way of working and experience in independently processing defined Engineering Work Packages

Advantageous:

Knowledge of LM.VM 2023

Experience in Downstream Processing / Purification

Experience with technical tenders, vendor documentation, and package management

Knowledge of BIM/3D CAD review, Primavera/MS Project, or comparable engineering tools
