SAP Direct Material Sourcing Consultant | Discrete Manufacturing | $140/hr C2C

This is probably one of the more niche SAP searches I've worked on recently.

I'm looking for an experienced SAP Direct Material Sourcing (DMS) Consultant for an initial 6-month contract with our client in discrete manufacturing.

Travel: Some onsite travel to Detroit, Michigan

First, what do we mean by SAP DMS?

This is not SAP Document Management System.

We are talking about SAP Direct Material Sourcing, sitting at the intersection of SAP Product Sourcing, direct procurement, Procurement Planning, Supplier Quotation Management, supplier collaboration and S/4HANA.

It is a relatively specialist area of the SAP market, and I'm conscious that many people with the right background may not actually have "SAP DMS Consultant" written anywhere on their resume.

SAP Product Sourcing developed capabilities specifically around sourcing direct materials and components, including BOM and material-based sourcing, product costing, supplier quotations and collaboration around new products.

The newer direct-material sourcing landscape extends further into areas such as procurement planning, sourcing projects, demand aggregation, supplier collaboration, quotation management and integration across S/4HANA and the wider SAP ecosystem.

So where do I expect the right consultant to come from?

I'm interested in speaking with people who have evolved from backgrounds such as:

SAP MM/Sourcing & Procurement ? SAP Ariba ? Product Sourcing ? Direct Materials

or:

S/4HANA Sourcing & Procurement ? Product Sourcing ? Procurement Planning/QTM

or consultants who have specifically implemented SAP Product Sourcing, Direct Material Sourcing or Supplier Quotation Management.

Someone could therefore have 10, 15 or 20+ years in SAP procurement while having considerably less time specifically with DMS. That doesn't concern me.

What matters is whether you have actually worked with the relevant functionality.

What does the client need?

The strongest profiles will have experience across several of the following:

This is an end-to-end functional delivery role.

You should be comfortable working with the business to understand requirements, running fit-to-standard and gap-analysis sessions, producing functional specifications and process flows, supporting configuration and integration, and working through SIT, UAT, defect resolution, cutover, go-live and hypercare.

What I am NOT looking for

I'm not looking for a traditional SAP DMS/Document Management consultant.

I'm also unlikely to progress someone whose experience is limited to generic SAP MM, operational purchasing or indirect Ariba procurement without exposure to direct-material/product sourcing.

Equally, I don't expect every suitable consultant to tick every box.

If you have strong SAP Product Sourcing experience but your resume doesn't call it DMS, I still want to hear from you.

If you've worked hands-on with QTM/Supplier Quotation Management, I definitely want to hear from you.

If your background combines S/4HANA procurement + Product Sourcing + direct materials + supplier collaboration, let's talk.

The key thing I need to establish is what you personally configured, implemented or delivered, rather than whether all the right keywords appear on your resume.

Why this experience is different

Direct-material sourcing in industries such as automotive and discrete manufacturing is much closer to the product life cycle.

You're dealing with materials and components that actually go into the product, potentially involving BOMs, product launches, sourcing projects, costing, supplier quotations, design collaboration, demand aggregation and negotiated terms that ultimately need to flow into operational procurement.

That is the experience we're trying to find.
