An experienced automation engineer (m/f/d) with proven experience in micro-assembly, precision automation, and ideally in the field of fiber optic connections or fiber optic communication is sought.

The client already has experience with fiber technologies for medical and other specialized applications, but is now entering the field of fiber optic connectivity for data transmission and requires development and automation expertise for this.

We are not looking for a specialist (m/f/d) in a single area, but a personality who can view technical challenges holistically, develop experimental setups, build solutions at lab scale, and accompany them through to industrial implementation.

Task Description

Requirements Profile

• Exciting project.
• Long-term project.
• Start: By agreement
• Duration: 10 months with option for extension
• Utilization: 50-100% (by agreement)
• Project location: Mainz
• Remote: Partially possible by agreement and depending on the project phase. On-site presence required, especially during commissioning.
• Development of innovative automation concepts for the high-precision assembly of multiple fiber optic groups into corresponding connectors
• Evaluation of concepts regarding technical feasibility, positioning accuracy, process robustness, cycle time, costs, and integration into existing manufacturing processes
• Execution of feasibility studies and test series on internal systems and in cooperation with external technology partners
• Conception and validation of industrial image processing systems, including optics, lighting, camera technology, calibration, and evaluation algorithms
• Construction and further development of prototypes and demonstrators up to functional assemblies
• Support of small series production and transfer of developed solutions into reproducible industrial manufacturing processes
• Conception and planning of production facilities, including estimation of investment costs, space requirements, interfaces, and qualification effort
• Support of equipment procurement and commissioning, including creation of requirements specifications, supplier selection, acceptance, process qualification, and technical documentation

Requirements

SHOULD HAVE

• Extensive experience in the automation of micro-assembly and precision joining processes
• Experience with high-precision positioning technologies in the micrometer range
• Experience in plant and process development from feasibility study to series production
• Experience in precision mechanics, fiber technology, or cable connections
• Hands-on mentality and ability for practical implementation of development approaches
• Broad technical understanding across multiple disciplines
• Experience with optical or fiber optic components
• Experience in industrial image processing
• Experience with optical measurement technology, process monitoring, and camera-based control loops
• Experience with fiber optic communication or fiber optic data transmission
• Experience in special machine construction

• Existing network with suppliers in the fields of automation, image processing, precision positioning, or special machine construction
• Deployment as a small expert team (2-3 people) possible
• German and English; alternatively exclusively English or German with limited English skills
