Job description
An infrastructure fund is seeking an experienced Senior District Heating Expert for freelance work to provide technical sparring for heat network partnership projects with municipal utilities.
Project overview
For a European infrastructure fund with a growing strategy in Germany in the area of municipal heat networks, we are looking for an experienced Senior District Heating Expert as a freelancer.
Our client is currently developing several partnership projects with municipal utilities. For the technical sparring partner phase, the expert should provide professional support to the team in evaluating, structuring, and negotiating these partnerships.
Responsibilities
- Technical sparring in the evaluation of existing district heating networks and planned expansion measures
- Assessment of network expansion, densification, and transformation plans
- Evaluation of decarbonization paths (e.g., large heat pumps, waste heat, geothermal, biomass, storage) and municipal heat strategies or heat planning
- Support in discussions and negotiations with technical teams and management of municipal utilities
- Plausibility check of technical assumptions in business cases (CAPEX, operating costs, schedules)
Requirements

- 20–30 years of professional experience in district heating, ideally in a management position with municipal utilities, energy suppliers, or in specialist consulting
- Profound experience in network expansion, decarbonization, and heat strategy
- Proven negotiation experience with municipal utility teams
- Very good knowledge of the German market and regulatory environment (including WPG, BEW, GEG)
- Fluent German, good English (working language in the fund is partly English)
- Immediate availability
- Freelance work
- Scope initially 2–4 days per month, with the option to expand
- Predominantly remote, occasional on-site appointments at municipal utilities in Germany
- Start: immediately
