Project overview
Job Title: Senior Software Engineer (Python & Distributed Systems)
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to support and scale software systems inside our Cambridge data collection lab. You will build and integrate backend services for cutting-edge prototype wearables, handling multi-modal sensor streams (audio, video, IMU) to ensure data collection is fast, accurate, and reliable.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop backend services to integrate prototype wearable devices into data collection pipelines.
- Deploy, monitor, and optimize distributed systems ingesting real-time sensor modalities.
- Build automated tooling for data validation, system health, and pipeline diagnostics.
- Provide onsite troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and network debugging in a live lab environment.
- Collaborate with audio/video engineers, technicians, and international research teams.
Requirements
- Python: 8+ years of professional backend software engineering and data processing experience.
- Linux & Automation: Strong Linux systems knowledge and shell scripting (Bash).
- Networking & Distributed Systems: Solid understanding of IP networking (IPv4/IPv6, VLANs, routing) and building RESTful/concurrent distributed systems.
- APIs: Practical experience with modern frameworks like FastAPI, Flask, or Django.
- Work Arrangement: 100% onsite in Cambridgeshire across central Cambridge and Bourn Quarter facilities.
