Job description

Develop and optimize core software for high-precision semiconductor measurement systems, focusing on high-performance C#/.NET for real-time sensor data processing and low-latency architectures.

Project overview

Our client is a globally leading technology provider for high-precision optical inspection and measurement systems (e.g., white light interferometry and reflectometry) for the semiconductor industry. The systems measure wafer surfaces down to the atomic level and are directly connected to the FAB control systems of leading chip manufacturers.

For the next generation of high-precision semiconductor measurement technology systems, the core software for capturing, in-memory processing, and analyzing high-volume sensor data streams is being scaled and further developed. The project operates at the intersection of high-level architecture and native system programming: To ensure measurements in the nanometer range without latency gaps, C# must be used like a system programming language – with full control over memory allocations, thread synchronization, and CPU cache efficiency to eliminate stop-the-world pauses of the garbage collector.

Framework Data of the Position

  • Start: ASAP / by arrangement
  • Duration: 6 months (option to extend)
  • Utilization: Full-time (part-time by arrangement)
  • Location: Mannheim area (Hybrid: 60% remote / approx. 2 days per week on-site for hardware tests)
  • Project language: English

Responsibilities

  • Conception, implementation, and optimization of high-performance, near-real-time processing engines for optical sensor data in modern C# / .NET
  • Design of low-latency, multi-threaded, and lock-free architectures for massive in-memory data processing
  • Consistent avoidance of GC pressure through zero-allocation design patterns (Span, POH, ArrayPool, stackalloc)
  • Connection of hardware-near drivers and native C/C++ libraries via high-performance interop mechanisms (P/Invoke, Blittable Types, Pinned Memory)
  • Root cause and performance analysis at CPU, memory, and IL/machine code level for deadlocks, latency peaks, or hardware quirks
  • Support of modern software engineering practices (Clean Architecture, TDD, automated tests) in an international Scrum team

Requirements

  • Many years of senior expertise in C# (v14) and modern .NET with a clear focus on high-performance, systems programming, or hardware-near software development
  • Profound understanding of the CLR memory model and memory layout at byte level (object overhead, SyncBlock, MethodTable, Gen 0–2, LOH, Pinned Object Heap)
  • Routine in using modern zero-allocation primitives (Span, ReadOnlySpan, Memory, ArrayPool, NativeMemory)
  • In-depth knowledge in concurrency and multi-threading at the hardware level (lock-free patterns, atomic CAS operations via Interlocked, memory barriers, avoidance of false sharing / cache-line bouncing)
  • Demonstrable experience in managed/unmanaged interop (P/Invoke, marshaling, pinning, handling pointer arithmetic in unsafe context)
  • Experience with system-level profiling and diagnostic tools (e.g., WinDbg with SOS, PerfView, BenchmarkDotNet, or JetBrains dotMemory)
  • Project experience in hardware-related domains (metrology, sensor technology, image processing/machine vision, medical technology, or high-throughput systems)
  • Fluent English skills

  • Domain knowledge in optical metrology, interferometry, semiconductor manufacturing, or SECS/GEM interfaces
  • Experience in C/C++ development or migration of monolithic measurement software to service-oriented architectures
  • Knowledge in RESTful API design for control and machine interfaces
  • UI development with .NET MAUI or WPF
  • German language skills
