Freelance Project: Senior Engineer Automation and Industrial Image Processing

Project overview

For a technology-oriented industrial company, a freelance specialist is sought at short notice for the development and automation of high-precision micro-assembly processes.

The assignment is initially planned for ten months; an extension is possible. The scope is at least 50%, with higher utilization being desirable. Remote work is possible depending on the project phase and task. Regular on-site presence is expected for experimental setups, system integration, and commissioning.

Responsibilities

• Development of automation concepts for high-precision assembly processes
• Evaluation of technical concepts regarding:
• Feasibility

• Process robustness
• Cycle time
• Costs
• Interfaces to upstream and downstream processes
• Planning and execution of feasibility studies and experimental series
• Conception and validation of industrial image processing systems
• Selection and design of:
• Optics
• Lighting
• Cameras
• Calibration
• Evaluation algorithms
• Construction of prototypes and demonstrators
• Support of small series and transfer to reproducible manufacturing processes
• Conception and planning of production facilities
• Evaluation of investment costs, space requirements, interfaces, and qualification effort
• Creation of specifications
• Supplier selection and technical coordination
• Support of acceptances, commissioning, and process qualifications
• Technical documentation of results

• Several years of experience in the automation of micro-assembly or precision joining processes
• Experience with positioning accuracies in the micrometer range
• Ideally, project experience in the field of optical, fiber optic, electronic, or other high-precision components
• Sound knowledge of industrial image processing
• Experience in the design of optics, lighting, cameras, and image processing algorithms
• Practical knowledge of HALCON or comparable systems, such as Cognex VisionPro, Keyence, or OpenCV
• Experience with optical measurement technology and camera-based control loops
• Experience in feasibility studies, prototype construction, small series, and series transfer
• Experience with special machine builders, automation providers, and precision positioning
• Ability to independently develop technical concepts into robust solutions
• Strong analytical, creative, and interdisciplinary thinking
• Independent, structured, and pragmatic way of working
• Manual dexterity and high problem-solving competence
• Very good communication skills
• Good German and English skills
