Job description
Seeking three experienced freelance Go developers for an open-source infrastructure project focused on a European Sovereign Cloud, working on Kubernetes controllers and operators. The project involves developing production-ready, self-healing virtual machines on the IronCore platform.
Project overview
For an open-source infrastructure project in the environment of a European Sovereign Cloud, we are looking for three experienced freelancers (100% each).
FRAME DATA
THE PROJECT
The work will be done upstream in the open-source project IronCore (NeoNephos Foundation / Linux Foundation Europe). IronCore is an IaaS platform for sovereign clouds on own hardware. Compute, storage, and networking are controlled via Kubernetes-like, declarative APIs and reconciled by controllers. Below this run libvirt/KVM, Cloud Hypervisor, Ceph, and a proprietary networking stack, plus integration with Gardener.
The goal is to make virtual machines on IronCore production-ready and self-healing: provisioning in groups (MachineSets), scaling, automatic recovery after host and guest failures (including encrypted volumes and network identity), and clean integration as Gardener worker nodes.
Development is done entirely publicly on GitHub. Designs are coordinated with the maintainers, code is reviewed and merged upstream. For you, this means: a public contribution record and direct collaboration with the maintainers.
IMPORTANT: We are looking for software developers who write Go code themselves, especially Kubernetes Controllers/Operators (controller-runtime, Kubebuilder, CRDs). Pure DevOps or platform operations profiles are unfortunately not suitable.
ROLE 1: Senior Technical Lead (hands-on)
Must-have: very good Go, Kubernetes Controllers/Operators, distributed systems and failure recovery, technical leadership
ROLE 2: Senior Kubernetes / Go Controller Engineer
Must-have: very good Go, controller-runtime/CRDs, concurrency and idempotency, envtest, RBAC
ROLE 3: Cloud Integration Engineer (Mid-Level)
Must-have: Go, Kubernetes APIs, cloud-init and/or Ignition, strong debugging skills
NICE-TO-HAVE (all roles)
libvirt/KVM, Cloud Hypervisor, KubeVirt, Gardener, Cluster API, Metal3, Ceph, open-source contributions

Please send us your current profile stating your preferred role, your hourly rate, and your availability. Links to GitHub or code examples (Go, Controllers/Operators) are very welcome.
