Job description

The COA (Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers) is looking for a Senior UX Designer to identify and solve real problems for on-site employees, translating them into solutions for the development team. This role involves working within the COA's design system and advocating for user-centered design principles.

Project overview

Assignment Description – Senior UX Designer Organizational Context The COA (Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers) is responsible for the reception and guidance of asylum seekers in the Netherlands. Our services require reliable, transparent, and well-organized information provision. The ICT department plays a central role in this by setting up systems and processes that effectively contribute to our societal task.

What you will do The Reception & Chain Team focuses on the management, maintenance, and (re)development of the systems used in the COA's primary process. These systems are developed and managed in-house. As a Senior UX Designer, you will find out what the real problem is for the employee on location, and translate that into a solution that the development team can build. You will not be given an assignment, but a problem. You determine the approach. The employees at the reception locations are your users. Every minute they spend on an inconvenient screen is at the expense of time for residents.

Your question is therefore always: what is the real problem here, and how can we make it as easy as possible for the employee on location?

You will work daily with product owners, business analysts, and developers, within the COA's design system. UX is still young at the COA, so you will also explain why a good solution starts with the question and not with the screen.

The Team You will join the UX group of the Reception and Chain team, part of COA ICT: two UX/UI designers and a UX lead. The lead will provide feedback but does not set the direction. Together with the designers from two other directorates, you will form the UX guild.

Who are you? You determine for yourself what the real question is and what approach suits it. You know when a question deserves an extensive process and when a quick solution is better for the team and the user. You can explain your work to non-designers and you dare to push back. You possess:

Other Information

  • You will sharpen the question, observe users, and come up with a solution that solves the problem, is feasible, and remains maintainable.
  • You will determine how much design a question requires. Sometimes a sketch with a developer is enough, sometimes research with users is needed before anything is drawn.
  • You will deliver flows and states build-ready, hand them over to developers, and check if what has been built matches the design.
  • You will document your choices so that the team can find out why something is the way it is even after your assignment.
  • You will design with existing components and submit a component request if something is missing.
  • You will push back if an assignment is incorrect, before any drawing is done.
  • A minimum of 6 years of experience as a UX/UI designer in product teams, with live work for which you can justify your design choices.
  • Experience with interaction design, information architecture, and UI within a design system in Figma.
  • Demonstrable experience from problem to solution: you can explain what you solved, what you weighed, and why you chose what you chose.
  • Knowledge of WCAG, applied in the design and translated into concrete adjustments.
  • Excellent command of the Dutch language, both spoken and written, for UX texts in understandable government language.
  • Experience in government or another large organization with legacy systems is a pré.
  • Experience with independently setting up and conducting user tests and interviews is a pré.
  • A contribution to a design system (components, tokens, documentation) is a pré.
  • Experience with AI-assisted tooling, such as Figma Make or Claude Code, is a pré.
  • Hybrid working is possible; presence in The Hague is expected on two fixed days (in consultation)
  • A Certificate of Conduct (VOG) is mandatory before the start of the assignment
