System Developer – Excel, VBA and Office Conversion

Project overview

We are looking for a system developer with very good competence in Excel, VBA, and Office scripts for an assignment with one of our clients. The assignment focuses on decommissioning old Office file formats and ensuring an efficient transition to modern file formats.

You will contribute technical expertise and practical support in converting Excel macros and VBA scripts. The role involves close collaboration with business users and other technical parties.

Assignment Description

In the role, you will among other things:

Mandatory Requirements

• Support the work of converting old Office formats, for example .xls and .doc, to newer formats like .xlsx and .docx.
• Review, debug, adapt, and further develop Excel macros and VBA scripts.
• Participate in the further development of the NSS system together with the system supplier for inventory and automatic conversion.
• Assist with expertise in converting solutions where SAS scripts are used for statistical processing and the results are further processed in Excel.
• Develop and modify existing solutions to support the conversion work.
• Collaborate with users and responsible parties within the business.
• Continuously document implemented changes and hand over solutions verbally and in writing.

Personal Qualities

The assignment involves extensive contact and communication with business users. Therefore, it is important that you have good social skills and can collaborate with various stakeholders in the conversion work.

• Excel: Good understanding of how Excel works and its various functions.
• Programming Concepts: Ability to understand and practically apply variables, loops, conditions, and functions at an advanced level.
• Macros and VBA: Ability to review and edit code to ensure applications function correctly.
• Debugging: Ability to identify and solve problems in macros and VBA code.
• Adaptation and Automation: Ability to adapt existing macros and VBA scripts or create new ones to automate workflows.
• Office Scripts: Ability to use the action recorder to record and create Office scripts.
• TypeScript: Understand TypeScript code for more advanced scripts.
• Security Awareness: Understand the security differences between VBA and Office Scripts, including that VBA has full access to the computer while Office Scripts only have access to the workbook.
• Platform-Independent Thinking: Understand the differences between macros, VBA scripts, and Office Scripts and be able to suggest the best future solution.
• Office Formats: Understand the differences between old and new Office formats and how older formats are best converted to new ones.
• Conversion and Metadata: Understand and be able to handle how metadata is read and used from Office files to support users in advanced automatic file conversion.
• Other Programming Languages: Ability to develop in other programming languages, such as PowerShell and .NET, to develop conversion code and modify existing solutions.
• Documented experience with the NSS tool.
• At least 4 years of experience with VB Script and PowerShell.
• At least 4 years of experience working with the Office suite, for example, technical expertise in installations and patching.
• At least 1 year of experience in converting Office formats.
