Job description

The Professorship for Data Engineering at Helmut Schmidt University is seeking a Postdoc Research Associate to conduct research at the intersection of machine learning, knowledge representation, and intelligent system engineering. The role involves developing innovative methods for data integration and analysis, guiding junior researchers, and contributing to teaching.

Project overview

Research Associate / Postdoc (m/f/d) Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Professorship for Data Engineering

At the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the German Armed Forces Hamburg (HSU/UniBw H), Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Professorship for Data Engineering (Prof. Dr. Maleshkova), the position of a

Research Associate

(m/f/d) (Pay group 14 Collective Agreement for the Public Service TVoD; 39 hours per week)

is to be filled as soon as possible, limited to a duration of 2 years.

The professorship's research lies at the intersection of machine learning, formal knowledge representation, and intelligent system engineering. The focus is on developing methods and frameworks that combine data-driven learning methods with structured domain knowledge, formal models, and semantic representations. This includes, in particular, ontologies and knowledge graphs, knowledge-based and hybrid learning methods, and physics-informed approaches.

A central research area is neuro-symbolic Artificial Intelligence (AI), where deep learning methods are combined with formal representation and reasoning methods to incorporate structured background knowledge and logical constraints into learning systems and achieve explainable results. Furthermore, multi-agent systems are investigated in which autonomous AI agents cooperate, communicate, and reason, for applications in scientific discovery, data management pipelines, and complex engineering workflows, among others.

Area of Responsibility:

  • Postdoc -
  • Addressing scientific questions as well as conceptualizing, methodologically designing, and further developing research activities in the areas of Data Engineering, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence
  • Developing and researching innovative methods and systems for the integration, processing, and analysis of heterogeneous data, especially using knowledge graphs, semantic technologies, and neuro-symbolic approaches
  • Providing technical guidance and advice to scientists as well as coordinating, managing content, and ensuring the quality of scientific research work
  • Presenting and publishing scientific results at national and international conferences as well as participating in the conception, application, technical coordination, and management of scientific research projects
  • Participating in the preparation, organization, and execution of examinations as well as coordinating and supervising the research and doctoral projects of doctoral candidates, including support in the creation of scientific publications
  • Scientific collaboration in research projects as well as support in the execution and further development of the research activities of the Professorship for Data Engineering
  • Contribution to teaching amounting to fundamentally 3 trimester hours per week
  • Opportunity for further scientific qualification (e.g., Habilitation)
  • Handling general administrative tasks and academic activities in academic self-governance
