Job description
Experienced support is sought for IBM mainframe/host systems (PL/I, COBOL, JCL, DB2/SQL, TABEX) until their gradual decommissioning over the next two to three years. The role involves independent analysis, troubleshooting, and technical support.
Project overview
Experienced support is sought who can independently familiarize themselves with existing system contexts, structurally analyze problems, and independently develop solution approaches for troubleshooting.
Technically, we operate in the classic IBM mainframe/host environment with PL/I and COBOL, JCL and batch/job flows, DB2/SQL, and TABEX.
The host systems are to be gradually replaced over the next two to three years. The resource should support operations until full replacement and comprehensibly assess technical dependencies, impacts, and risks.
Framework Conditions:
Requirements
High degree of independence in familiarization, analysis, and problem-solving; existing information sources and system contexts should be independently explored and evaluated
Analysis of existing code, documentation, job flows, and interfaces
Independent and structured troubleshooting, including narrowing down error causes and developing suitable solution approaches
Maintenance and technical support of existing applications in freeze status
Analysis of dependencies with upstream and downstream systems
Assessment of impacts and risks of planned replacements or decommissioning
Ability to independently understand contexts and derive reliable findings even with incomplete documentation
Comprehensible documentation of findings and relevant dependencies
Technical Environment
For these tasks, the resource should bring sound practical experience in the IBM mainframe/host environment, particularly:
PL/I and COBOL, especially for reading, analyzing, and maintaining existing code
JCL and experience in analyzing batch and job flows
DB2 / SQL
TABEX or experience working with TABEX tables
Analysis of existing interfaces and data flows
Furthermore, experience with IMS DB/DC, TSO/ISPF, and REXX is advantageous.
Analysis and maintenance of host/legacy applications; independent troubleshooting and structured error analysis; production support; code and dependency analysis; independent familiarization and problem-solving even with incomplete documentation; sound PL/I/COBOL knowledge and experience with JCL, DB2/SQL, TABEX, and batch/job flows in the IBM host environment
Experience with established system landscapes, interfaces, batch/job flows, as well as incident and problem situations; ability to independently understand technical contexts, assess impacts, and derive solution approaches
Project details
asap
until decommissioning
1.5 days per month + additional acute error corrections as needed
Support is currently provided by 2 external individuals, one of whom needs to be replaced soon.
Error handling for the supported systems lies entirely with this duo. This includes keeping an eye on relevant messages and emails and independently initiating analysis and processing of errors that occur. Therefore, it is important to us that the new resource not only reacts to specific individual tasks but also actively takes responsibility for ongoing support together with the second resource.
