Senior DevOps Engineer – GitLab Runner & Cloud Infrastructure

Project overview

We are looking for an experienced Senior DevOps Engineer for a 5-month project in the area of cloud infrastructure and CI/CD automation. The position is fully remote and starts mid-May 2026.

Project Context:

The project focuses on the evaluation and implementation of a modern GitLab Runner infrastructure on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as an alternative to an existing Kubernetes-based system. In parallel, extensive work will be carried out on the VM and container image infrastructure.

Responsibilities

• Comparative evaluation of GitLab Runner Fleeting against the current Kubernetes executor
• Design and implementation of a target architecture in a dedicated GCP project
• Establishment of a transparent cost and billing structure
• Planning of a phased migration with minimal impact on existing teams
• Upgrade of base images (Debian 12 to 13) and modernization of related services
• Automation of future image updates
• Implementation of a pull-through cache for container images
• Migration of image definitions and optimization of registry traffic

Requirements

Practical experience with GitLab Runner Fleeting and Renovate Bot is desirable.

Working Language: German or English

• At least 5 years of experience in DevOps, Platform Engineering, or SRE
• Deep expertise in GitLab CI/CD, GitLab Runner Operations, and Autoscaling
• Profound GCP knowledge (Compute Engine, Network, IAM, Billing)
• Very good Terraform and Ansible skills
• Solid Linux/Debian system administration
• Experience with image lifecycle tools (e.g., Packer)
• Understanding of container registries and image management
• Production-oriented thinking with a focus on observability and cost efficiency
